A FRESH START

After deciding to leave Clerkenwell after 20+ years, their new home was to be the listed Tramshed building, originally a power station for the East London Tramway in 1905 on Rivington Street. Having sat, unloved, for many years, it was up to us to bring the Tramshed back to life. As well as this Vitra wanted to ensure that they respected the heritage of the site whilst integrating their own brand identity into the space.

Known for their colourful and modern forms, we created a space that complimented both the historical surroundings of the building and the eclectic style Vitra is known for. A classic example of how the old and new can enrich each other.

Within the main hall, we retained and refreshed the original glazed brick tiles and arches as a nod to the heritage of the building, as well as the original roof which floods the space with natural light. Known as “The Club” this large open plan space features breakout spaces, personal work areas, a bar-come kitchen complete with terrazzo worktops, and a private draped area for both internal and client meetings.

LEVELS OF BEAUTY

Our final task was to breathe new life into the basement. Once a tired and unused area, “The Gallery” is now an inspiring space that features designers’ work dedicated to the Vitra portfolio.

This crisp and clean space is transformed by the addition of colour that it now displays, ensuring that designers work remains centre stage in this vast area.

LEAVING STANDARDS HIGH

Overall this project is a beautiful example of how injecting life into a previous space can create something quite magical. The final result is a stunning showroom that Vitra are considering using as inspiration for other locations globally, and that’s just phase 1 complete.

We can’t wait to get stuck in with phase 2 in early 2023.
