9 Gough Chambers

A workspace fit for barristers

  • Interiors

Having outgrown their existing space, 9 Gough Chambers had moved from a characterful, listed building to a new and modern grade A office space on the south side of Chancery Lane.

It was important for Thirdways design team to strike the right balance between retaining some of the character and elegance that the old workplace had, while be sympathetic and congruent with the modern architecture that the new space possessed.

Colour, tone and texture was used to create a space that could have all the impact desired, but with the improved functions of a modern workspace. Dark blues, greens and browns add dramatic, yet contemporary elegance whilst stained wood introduces character to the space.

Key areas of the floor plan include:

– client facing areas and meeting rooms

– space for the operation teams to work from

– flexible areas for the lawyers to practise from

– terrace space for hosting industry events.

Storage was also incredibly important and balancing the practicalities of this alongside the high-functionality required of the space with the aesthetics was a key challenge.
